The Shark Fins Bill successfully completed its passage through the House of Lords today led by Baroness Jones of Whitchurch and supported by cross party Peers.
Christina Rees MP introduced the Bill to The House of Commons in 2022 as a Private Members Bill which was strongly supported by the Government.
Baroness Jones of Whitchurch said: “I’m pleased to have played a small part in bringing an end to this cruel and wasteful practice.”

“We are delighted that the Bill to ban the import and sale of detached shark fins has passed its Third Reading in the House of Lords today.The practice of shark finning is incredibly cruel and completely incompatible with our nation’s high regard for animal welfare. We know that a number of species of shark are sadly classified as “critically endangered”, with the practice of shark finning playing a significant role in their decline. We welcome this important measure to protect sharks.”
Conservative Animal Welfare Foundation look forward to the Bill receiving Royal Assent in the coming months and for the Bill to proceed into legislation.
