Conservative Animal Welfare Foundation welcomes the ban on wild animals in travelling circuses

Conservative Animal Welfare Foundation welcomes today’s announcement that the use of wild animals in travelling circuses will be banned in England from January 2020.

The organisation has campaigned for an end to the use of wild animals in circuses and is delighted that the government is taking action on this issue. Conservative Animal Welfare Foundation proposed a ban in their ‘ Brexit: Opportunities For Animal Welfare’ document which was delivered to No10 in January 2017 with Patron Sir Roger Gale MP.

Patron Rt Hon Sir Roger Gale said:

“This is very welcome news. Any use of wild animals in a travelling circus has no place in modern society. The Bill follows other measures the Government has taken to strengthen the UKs position as a world leader on animal protection.

Lorraine Platt, Co- Founder commented:

“We are pleased that the Government is introducing a Bill to ban the use of wild animals in travelling circuses, fulfilling a Conservative manifesto commitment. The needs of wild animals cannot be met in travelling circuses. These acts belong in the past.”

Opinion polls consistently show that the UK public support a ban on wild animals in circuses.

Scotland became the first country in the UK to ban the use of wild animals in travelling circuses in December 2017.
