Great News! The Animal Welfare (Sentience) Bill has come one step closer to becoming enshrined in UK law. The Committee Stage took place in the House of Commons on 10 February and it passed to the Report Stage
Today the Conservative Animal Welfare Foundation has welcomed an amendment laid by Patron Henry Smith MP to the Animal Welfare (Kept Animals) Bill on the handling and transport of laying hens prior to slaughter.

The Environment Bill is now law.
This legislation will clean up our air, water and land and help us combat:
Biodiversity loss
Climate change
Waste
These changes will be driven by legally binding environmental targets and will be enforced by a new independent Office for Environmental Protection.
The Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, George Eustice, opened the Second Reading of the Animal Welfare (Kept Animals) Bill by noting that the UK was the first country in the world to pass legislation to protect animals as long ago as the Cruel Treatment of Cattle Act 1822.
There has never been any question that the Conservative Party believes animals are sentient beings. We have a proud tradition of animal welfare measures. Within weeks of being Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher introduced the Farm Animal Welfare Committee. Since then, Conservative governments have led the way in animal welfare.
We welcome the Government’s announcement that pet abduction will become a criminal offence in the UK, following the publication of a report by the Government’s Pet Theft Taskforce.
Boiling lobsters alive will be banned under plans being drawn up by ministers to strengthen the welfare rights of crustaceans and molluscs.
The Government has announced fines of up to £5,000 for animal offences proposed under new Penalty Notices Bill.
The Bill will, amongst other animal welfare legislation, bring an end to the export of live animals for slaughter and fattening.
