Saturday 2nd November – Today the Conservative Animal Welfare Foundation (CAWF) has welcomed Kemi Badenoch MP as the new leader of the Conservative Party.

For over forty years, the Conservative Party has consistently championed animal welfare reforms. From establishing the introduction of Margaret Thatcher’s Farm Animal Welfare Committee, to John Major’s ban on veal crates, David Cameron’s ban on battery cages, Theresa May’s Ivory Act, Boris Johnson’s Sentience Act or Rishi Sunak’s ban on live exports for slaughter and fattening, Conservative leadership has repeatedly supported measures to improve welfare standards for animals across the UK.

As Kemi takes up her new role, we urge her to continue this proud legacy and to lead on advancing animal welfare reforms. Our calls to action include an end to cages for laying hens, a ban on pig farrowing crates, the introduction of mandatory animal welfare labelling and stronger legal protections for farmed fish. Additionally, we request Kemi’s support in combatting puppy smuggling and banning trophy hunting imports – policies outlined both in the Conservative and Government’s manifestos.

Lorraine Platt, Co-Founder of Conservative Animal Welfare Foundation, commented: “We are pleased to welcome Kemi Badenoch as the new Leader of the Conservative Party. The Conservatives have a proud track record of introducing new animal welfare legislation and we look forward to building on this strong legacy together.”

About Conservative Animal Welfare Foundation (CAWF)

The Conservative Animal Welfare Foundation was established in 2016 to raise awareness on the lives of billions of animals reared on intensive farms around the world and how this impacts upon animal welfare, the environment and people’s health. We want to highlight the action people can take to help advance farm animal welfare.

Animal welfare is an increasing concern amongst the public, who frequently look to Government to take the lead in both maintaining and improving standards.

The Conservative Animal Welfare Foundation believes it is highly important that the welfare of farm animals is placed at the forefront of the Governments plan for food and farming along with its focus on productivity, competitiveness, and technology.
