LONDON, Thursday 7th July 2022

The Conservative Animal Welfare Foundation (CAWF) is saddened by the resignation of Prime Minister, Rt Hon. Boris Johnson MP today as Leader of the Conservative Party.

As a champion for animal welfare, we would like to pay tribute to the many important animal welfare achievements under his leadership. This includes the creation of the world-leading Action Plan for Animal Welfare which paved the way for the Animal Welfare (Sentience) Act and the Animal Welfare (Kept Animals) Bill – the latter of which is still continuing its passage through the House of Commons. Under this Government, the UK has also introduced the Animal Welfare (Penalty Notices) Act, the Animal Welfare (Sentencing) Act, the Glue Traps (Offences) Act, the Environment Act and the Animal Health and Welfare Pathway.

As a strong voice for animal welfare in the Conservative Party, we will continue to campaign to advance welfare standards for our farmed animals.

We would like to thank Mr. Johnson for his time as Leader of the Conservative Party and look forward to working closely with his successor on the continuing advancement of animal welfare in the UK.

Chris Platt and Lorraine Platt, Co-Founders of the Conservative Animal Welfare Foundation (CAWF)
