Today (Tuesday 5th November), the Conservative Animal Welfare Foundation (CAWF) has welcomed the appointment of the Rt Hon. Victoria Atkins MP as Shadow Secretary of State for the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra).

Conservative Animal Welfare Foundation would like to see the new Shadow Defra leadership commit to ending cages for laying hens and end farrowing crates for sows on factory farms, as well as the implementation of mandatory animal welfare labelling and stronger protections for farmed fish.

Lorraine Platt, Co-Founder of Conservative Animal Welfare Foundation, commented: “Conservative Animal Welfare Foundation is delighted to welcome the Rt Hon. Victoria Atkins MP as Shadow Secretary of State for Defra. The Conservatives have a proud record of delivering new legislation to advance animal welfare for animals over many decades, including the first live exports ban for slaughter and fattening in Europe. We hope Victoria Atkins will build on this in her new role. We wish her the very best for her time as Shadow Secretary of State and look forward to supporting her to advance animal welfare standards in the UK.”

About Conservative Animal Welfare Foundation (CAWF)
The Conservative Animal Welfare Foundation was established in 2016 to raise awareness on the lives of billions of animals reared on intensive farms around the world and how this impact upon animal welfare, the environment and people’s health. We want to highlight the action people can take to help advance farm animal welfare.
Animal welfare is an increasing concern amongst the public, who frequently look to Government to take the lead in both maintaining and improving standards.
The Conservative Animal Welfare Foundation believes it is highly important that the welfare of farm animals is placed at the forefront of the Governments plan for food and farming along with its focus on productivity, competitiveness, and technology.
